چکیده

We present a new initiative to create a training program or graduate-level course (cybertraining.umbc.edu) in big data applied to atmospheric sciences as application area and using highperformance computing as indispensable tool. The training consists of instruction in all three areas of "Big Data + HPC + Atmospheric Sciences" supported by teaching assistants and followed by faculty-guided project research in a multidisciplinary team of participants from each area. Participating graduate students, post-docs, and junior faculty from around the nation will be exposed to multidisciplinary research and have the opportunity for significant career impact. The paper discusses the challenges, proposed solutions, practical issues of the initiative, and how to integrate high-quality developmental program evaluation into the improvement of the initiative from the start to aid in ongoing development of the

A note on new trends in data-aware scheduling and resource provisioning in modern HPC systems

The Big Data era [1,2] poses new challenges as well as significant opportunities for High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems such as how to efficiently turn massively large data into valuable information and meaningful knowledge? It is clear that computationally optimized new data-driven HPC techniques are required for processing Big Data in rapidly-increasing number of applications, such as L...

Late Holocene Caspian Sea Level Changes and its Impacts on Low Lying Coastal Evolution: a Multidisciplinary Case Study from South Southeastern Flank of the Caspian Sea

Caspian Sea is the largest land locked water body in the world and has been characterized by significant relative sea-level changes since the Pliocene. The sea-level oscillations have strongly impacted the coastal areas depending on geomorphological setting. This study aims to investigate the impacts of sea level oscillations on low-lying coasts of the southeastern flank of the Caspian Sea...

Big Data at HPC Wales

This paper describes an automated approach to handling Big Data workloads on HPC systems. We describe a solution that dynamically creates a unified cluster based on YARN in an HPC Environment, without the need to configure and allocate a dedicated Hadoop cluster. The end user can choose to write the solution in any combination of supported frameworks, a solution that scales seamlessly from a fe...

Big Data, Simulations and HPC Convergence

Two major trends in computing systems are the growth in high performance computing (HPC) with in particular an international exascale initiative, and big data with an accompanying cloud infrastructure of dramatic and increasing size and sophistication. In this paper, we study an approach to convergence for software and applications/algorithms and show what hardware architectures it suggests. We...
